Summary: Mote Marine Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit marine research organization dedicated to the advancement of marine and environmental sciences through research and education. Since its inception in 1955, the Laboratory's primary mission has been the pursuit of excellence in scientific research and the dissemination of information to the scientific community as well as the general public. Although internationally recognized through the scientists' worldwide research and publications, much of the Laboratory's effort is directed toward the Southwest Florida coastal region. Through this research, the Laboratory provides a center for the exchange of scientific information, hosting visiting scientists, college and high school student interns, educational programs for all ages, and conferences. Public outreach is provided through the American Association of Museums accredited Mote Aquarium which attracts 360,000 visitors annually. The Laboratory's educational programs for kindergartners through adults serves more than 30,000 individuals annually. Specific highly interactive innovative educational programs are implemented through the World Wide Web and distance learning initiatives. Research Programs at Mote reflect the diversity of the scientific staff, often working in cooperation with each other and with scientists from other institutions to accomplish the interdisciplinary approach required for complex marine and environmental studies. These programs emphasize: biomedical, immunology, chemical fate and effects, red tide and other harmful algal blooms, chemical ecology, benthic ecology, environmental assessment and enhancement, fisheries ecology, biology and aquaculture, information systems, marine mammals and sea turtles conservation and research, microbiology, phytoplankton, coral reef ecology, shark biology, landscape ecology, coastal resources and ecology, and human and ecological health.
